Nature and history

In the city centre

Lovers of history can visit the Gouverneurstuin (garden) and the monumental Drents Archief, where you can learn more about the rich history of Drenthe. For those who prefer nature, Asserbos (forest) and the surrounding city parks are a lovely place for a quiet walk or a picnic in the greenery.

In the middle of the Asserbos is the Duurzaamheidscentrum Assen (Sustainability Centre) situated. It is a unique spot in this historic city forest, a short distance from the centre of Assen.

Practical information for your day-trip from Midden-Drenthe

It takes about 20 to 25 minutes by car, via the N374 and N33, directly to the centre of Assen. Parking is easy in one of the many car parks, such as the Drents Museumgarage or the Torenlaan.

Do you prefer to travel by public transport? Then we recommend planning your journey via 9292ov. You then take the bus from bus stop Westerbork in the direction of Beilen or Assen. From Beilen, it is just a short train ride to Assen station.

Even by bike, it's a nice trip of about 20 kilometres, along rural roads and Drenthe landscapes. A good start to an active day trip.
