Dwingeloo is known as one of the most beautiful green villages in the Netherlands. The picturesque village centre, with its characteristic green village square, historic buildings and the famous Sint-Nicolaaskerk with its striking ‘paddle-shaped’ spire, exudes tranquillity and history. Stroll along the cosy shops, enjoy a terrace or sample local delicacies at one of the atmospheric restaurants or eateries.

For nature lovers, Dwingeloo is a true paradise. The village borders National Park Dwingelderveld, Western Europe's largest wet heathland area. Take a walk or bike ride across the vast heathlands, along fens, sandy paths and woods. Along the way, you may encounter Scottish highlanders or sheep herds. At Natuurmonumenten's visitor centre in Ruinen, near Dwingeloo, you will find information, walking routes and fun activities for children.

A day at Dwingeloo is suitable for the whole family. Visit the Radiotelescope Dwingeloo, an impressive feat of technology in the middle of nature. It is one of the oldest radio telescopes in the world (from 1956), beautifully located in the Dwingelderveld National Park. Or discover the Sterrenwacht education centre, where young and old learn more about the universe.

Visit the historic Radiotelescope Dwingeloo, one of the oldest radio telescopes in the world (from 1956), beautifully located in National Park Dwingelderveld. Although access to the site is limited, there are regular open days, guided tours and stargazing evenings through the CAMRAS Foundation.

The old Planetron now houses the De Melkweg | Open Science Hubs Drenthe. Here one walks through the history of radio astronomy in great strides, and why has the Netherlands become so important in it? The open science hub combines technology and science for curious people of all ages.
