South Groningen

A daytrip from the park

For a day trip with plenty of nature and culture, visit South Groningen, near the border with the province of Drenthe. The southern regions of Westerwolde and the Veenkoloniën, show a small-scale, green and surprising Groningen.

Westerwolde is a green region in the southeast of Groningen, close to the German border. Unlike the open Groningen landscape, Westerwolde is gently rolling and rich in forests, stream valleys and wooded banks. Perfect for walkers, cyclists and those seeking peace and quiet.

The Groninger Veenkoloniën lie to the west of Westerwolde. A region with straight canals, long ribbon villages and a rich history of peat extraction and agriculture. The landscape is open, vast and steeped in stories.

Sights in this region include:

  • Stadskanaal: a lively town with shops, a museum railway (STAR) and beautiful walking routes along the canal.
  • Veenkoloniaal Museum Veendam: this surprisingly interesting museum tells the story of the rise of the peat colonies, shipping and agriculture.
  • Canal routes: cycle or walk along the old Stadskanaal or the Musselkanaal, where bridge keepers' houses, warehouses and old ships determine the atmosphere.
